15 days, March to November, 2020, from £3699 per person

Itinerary

Day 1: UK to Lima
Depart from Heathrow Airport and fly to Lima. Flights from other airports may be possible, please call to discuss. Flight supplement may apply. On arrival in Lima you will be met at the airport and escorted to your hotel.

Day 2: Lima – Paracas
This morning we transfer by bus to Paracas, a small seaside town bustling with life and gateway for the Ballestas Islands. The afternoon is free to enjoy the town and relax. (Breakfast included).

Day 3: Ballestas Islands
This morning we board a boat and head out toward the Ballestas Islands where we will enjoy close-up views of sea lions as they swim near the boat or sun themselves on shore. Watch hundreds of marine bird species including the Guanay Cormorant, Peruvian pelicans and with some luck even one of the famous Humboldt penguins. We return to the main land and visit the Paracas National Reserve is the only nature reserve, the Peruvian coast and considered one of the world’s strangest and richest ecosystems by UNESCO. As you enter the National Reserve you will have the chance to take pictures of the stunning natural rock formations like the ‘cathedral’ and the ‘friars’, sculpted by the wind and sea. A number of lookouts along the coast are ideal locations for landscape shots of the Paracas Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. (Breakfast included)

Day 4: Paracas – Arequipa
This morning we travel by bus to Lima airport for our flight to Arequipa (flight time approx 1½ hours) where we check into our hotel. Free time in Arequipa. (Breakfast included)

Day 5: Arequipa
Half day city tour of Arequipa visiting the extraordinary Santa Catalina Convent. This cloister, built in the 16th century, is a huge construction which once served as a town within itself housing 450 nuns. Traditionally, the oldest daughters of Arequipa’s aristocratic families entered the convent in their early teens and spent their lives there, cloistered away. The convent complex has been beautifully refurbished, bringing the past vividly alive once more. After the visit of the convent you will head to the Yanahuara lookout point for a magnificent view of the Misti Volcano and the city. (Breakfast included)

Day 6: Arequipa – Colca
This morning we leave Arequipa and head towards Colca. On your way we pass Pampa de Arrieros, Pampa Cañahuas (where we find the Vicuna National Reserve of Aguada Blanca), Mismi, Misti and Chachani volcanoes and the glaciers of Ampato, Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca which provide picturesque panoramic views as we enter the Colca Valley. We make a stop at Chivay, the most important town in the Colca Valley, before continuing to your hotel in Colca. (Breakfast and dinner included)

Day 7: Colca – Puno
After breakfast drive to the observation point ‘Mirador Cruz del Condor’, one of the deepest parts of the canyon where you will find the perfect spot to look down 1,200 m (3,937 ft) into the canyon. It’s here that the legendary condor can be seen rising and circling on the morning thermals, silhouetted against the magnificent backdrop of the mountain scenery. Afterwards continue our trip across Altiplano landscapes to Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. (Breakfast included).

Day 8: Lake Titicaca
Today’s excursion starts with a visit to the floating reed Islands of the Uros people who have been living in the lake for hundreds of years. From here we head to Taquile island, the indigenous community of Taquile has conserved across the centuries many of the customs of the old lake population, such as a communitarian life where everything is shared. The deep earthy red colour of the soil contrasts magnificently against the deep blue of Lake Titicaca with the stunning backdrop of the snowcapped Cordillera Real, on the far side makes this a perfect island to visit. (Breakfast and lunch included)

Day 9: Scenic Train through the Andes
We transfer to the rail station for a spectacular rail journey today beginning in Puno and travelling north to Cusco. This train journey cuts across the formidable Peruvian Altiplano. The first half of the full day journey is through the rolling Andean Plains, where vicuña and alpaca can be seen. The afternoon is dominated by the magnificent Andean mountains which tower over the deep valleys of the meandering Huatanay River. A gourmet lunch will be served on board one of the four dining cars. Traditional dances and music will be presented during the journey to make the special experience complete. Transfer to your hotel in Cusco. (Breakfast and lunch included)

Day 10: Cusco
This morning is at Leisure in Cusco. In the afternoon we have a tour to include the beautiful Koricancha Temple, the Cathedral and the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a most remarkable Inca building the amphitheater of Kenko. This is followed by a visit to Puca Pucara, a strategically located ‘red fortress’, that dominates the entire area, before visiting Tambomachay, with its two distinctive aqueducts that to this day continue to provide clean water to the area. (Breakfast included)

Day 11: Cusco – The Sacred Valley
This morning travel to the Pisaq market in the Sacred Valley. Originally a place where people from remote communities used to barter their products, Pisaq has evolved to one of South America’s most famous souvenir markets. This afternoon we visit the fortress of Ollantaytambo which houses the impressive Temple of the Sun, formed of six gigantic monoliths, and the Terrace of the Ten Niches. (Breakfast and lunch included).

Day 12: Sacred Valley
This morning we transfer to Ollanta train station for the Expedition train ride taking us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas up to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival a small coach takes you up the steep roads to the entrance of the citadel. For centuries Machu Picchu remained undiscovered by Peru’s Spanish and was eventually found in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. During a guided tour experience the uniqueness of the location and the genius that went into its construction, making this Inca site one of the seven new wonders of the world. Return by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollanta (or Poroy) train station for the transfer to the hotel. (Breakfast included)

Day 13: Cusco to Lima
